[S3] Term 1 Week 5 (3-9 Feb) Updates/Debrief
[S3 Physics PMCians]
What we did in 2 hours:
In the last lesson on Light, we explored more deeply into the concept of refraction to understand how light is able to reflect back completely within an optically denser medium. We call this phenomenon “Total Internal Reflection”.
We also had a pretty demanding test to challenge all your concepts, congrats to all those who earned PMC dollars for doing well!
What you take home:
Interesting video to illustrate how optical illusions like a mirage is formed through the concepts of Refraction. Remember “Seeing is not Believing!”

Special Mention:
Get ready to gear up your engines for the next lesson as we are going to zoom right into Kinematics, which is the study of motion! See you then!

What we did in 2 hours:
This week, we explored on one area of how quadratic equations behave. Without finding the roots, we can simply form a new equation using the value of sum/product of roots.
We also learnt a few algebraic identities to help us solve some of the question types in this chapter.
What you take home:
The solutions to Take Away Questions (Sum/Product of roots):
<Link to solutions – Take Away questions>
Special Mention:
In the next lesson, we will go through the Sum/Product of roots Test A and the remaining of this topic before moving on to Quadratic Inequalities.
Summary of Sum/Product of roots Test A:
High score: 20/20
Congratulations to the following students for scoring full marks in this test!
Claire Tan, from Dunman High School
Emma Hanson, from Singapore Chinese Girls’ School
Harika Vellampalli, from Cresent Girls’ School

What we did in 2 hours:
We mastered the thought process behind the drawing of dot and cross diagrams of complex covalent compounds and explored giant covalent and metallic structures as well as their properties.
What you take home:
As the chapter concludes, take some time to complete the questions in the Take Home Gems Package (answers are attached at the back!).
Special Mention:
We will soon consolidate our learning this year with a Topic Mastery Quiz on Separation Techniques, Kinetic Particle Theory, Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding. Do start your revision!
Trivia – Did you know that graphene is also used as water filtration systems: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CQ65gHY9DU
WEIGHTED ASSESSMENTS
As the weighed assessment season approaches, we would like to assure you that PMC is here to support you in every step of the way. Feel free to snap us a picture or drop us a message to clarify any doubts (and ask for tips) you may have with your revision and we will get back to you as soon as we can!”
Thank you.
